I Believe in the Divinity of Christ - Jesus is God
In response to a question (about the Trinity), I answered on a blog recently, I decided to repeat the question and answer here for the folks reading our blog.
I wrote on, May 7, 2009 and said, ‘He said, “He was the God of Abraham” and eluded to the fact he was in the burning bush, the God who spoke to Moses’.
You responded, “Really? I have never noticed that in 25 years of bible study. Please elaborate.”
So, in response to your statement, “I have never noticed that in 25 years of bible study.” I think this is the crux of the problem. In 25 years of Bible study, obviously you have gotten nothing from it, continuing to espouse “gibberish”.
Why did you not know of this scripture? But more importantly, you obviously avoided a discussion knowing this scripture exposes your heresy.
Jesus’ words are a forceful claim to Divinity; otherwise the crowd would not have attempted to stone him. They understood His claim to Divinity; they knew that He was saying He was God! They would not have been incensed with anger had he said anything else. Had he claimed to be a mere man or a Prophet they would not have taken up stones to kill him.
The reference is to John 8:58 where Jesus says, "before Abraham was, I Am” and it is a reference to Exodus 3:14 where God reveals his name as "I Am" to Moses in the burning bush.
John 8:58-59
:58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
:59 Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
We need neither, take up an argument about Greek verbiage, or tense, in that the people of Jesus’ time understood His claim to Divinity. Therefore, the only questions that can be asked are, did Jesus lie, or was He crazy? I think the bulk of Scripture supports the fact that He was not lying, nor was He crazy. Then you must come to the only logical conclusion, and that is, that He knew Himself to be God and said so in John 8:58.
